FreeCampus began with a simple conviction: access to excellent learning materials should not depend on where you live, what you earn, or whether you belong to an institution.
We bring together learners, educators, subject experts, editors, designers, and developers to create thoughtful materials across disciplines. Our work takes shape through two separate projects with complementary purposes: FreeCampus Community Courses and FreeCampus App.
FreeCampus Community Courses
FreeCampus Community Courses is our community effort to create and maintain open courses. Contributors develop explanations, examples, practical activities, and exercises that help people study independently, at their own pace.
Our ambition is to expand learning opportunities for millions of people worldwide, including across Latin America and Africa. By making high-quality materials developed and reviewed by experts freely accessible, we aim to help learners build skills, pursue new opportunities, and use what they learn to make a difference in their communities and the wider world.
The courses are published as public static web pages: lightweight course websites you can read directly in your browser. They include a few quizzes and learning tools to help you check your understanding and put ideas into practice. The tools available vary by course; suitable programming lessons may also offer notebooks you can run in Google Colab.
These courses are learning resources in their own right. You can follow their lessons without joining the App or paying for a subscription. Downloadable editions, where available, provide another way to study away from the website.
All community activities are unpaid volunteer work. Contributors improve the materials through corrections, new examples, review, and translations. Reuse and adaptation follow each course's license, with credit to the original contributors.

FreeCampus App
FreeCampus App is a separate commercial learning platform in development that builds courses on top of selected community courses. It uses those open materials as a foundation and adds a richer learning experience around them.
Its purpose is to help learners make better use of their study time, understand what they have learned, and decide what to work on next. The experience is being designed to connect explanations with purposeful practice, feedback, and opportunities to apply knowledge beyond the lesson.
For example, a learner studying a programming concept could move from reading an explanation to solving a challenge, understanding a mistake, and using the concept in a larger project. Planned capabilities include structured learning paths, progress tracking across devices, and deeper practice and assessment. These describe the App's direction, rather than features already available to learners.
We are designing primarily for smartphone users, with accessibility and efficient loading in mind. The goal is to help learners build confidence and practical skills, including those studying with limited connectivity or without a computer. Activities that require a computer should be clearly identified.
How the two projects fit together
Community Courses creates the open learning foundation. The App builds an enhanced learning experience around selected courses from that foundation. They share an educational mission while serving different needs.
- For independent study: Community Courses provides public lessons, exercises, and lightweight learning tools directly on the web.
- For more guided learning: The App is being developed to bring selected materials together with structured practice, feedback, and progress tracking.
- For open access: Community materials remain freely available on their public course websites, independently of App accounts, subscriptions, or participation.
- For sustainability: The App model includes a free tier and paid tiers. The App team manages its income for App operations and development; community participation does not provide a share of that revenue.
The App team may separately contract authors, translators, managers, and other supporters for specific paid tasks. These contracts belong to the App project and are distinct from unpaid community activities. Community participation does not grant decision-making authority in the App or guarantee that a course will have an App version. Any course adapted for the App must have a license that permits the intended use, and its contributors and original sources must be credited. You can use the community courses whether or not you choose to use the App.

Our public community courses have no admissions process or prescribed pace. You are welcome whether you are meeting a subject for the first time, returning after years away, or helping someone else understand it more deeply.
